Jujutsu Kaisen Characters Guide: Itadori, Fushigoro, Gojo, More

Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the newest anime series that focuses on the shounen demographic while also being quite dark and almost horror-like. Given that it is a shounen action series, though, this means that there are a lot of characters in the group to go over in our Jujutsu Kaisen characters guide.

The Jujutsu Kaisen characters guide is an intro to the series for newcomers, letting you know who is who among the large cast of heroes and villains alike. In addition, it can be helpful for those who have already caught up with manga or anime and need a refresher. Let’s get started.

Bottom Line Up Front

Jujutsu Kaisen Characters Guide

There are lots of characters that the reader and viewer of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga and anime are introduced to early on in the series. There are so many different classmates, teachers, students, villains, and more that are shown off at the beginning of the series.

Jujutsu Kaisen does not waste any time in showing off its large cast of characters. This can make it one of the more overwhelming shows as I remember being confused myself when I was first checking out. Who are the different villains, what are their motivations, and why is it focusing on two different schools?

You are thrown into the series without much warning, immediately getting to know a lot of people at once. This can make it rather confusing and hard to memorize who is who at the beginning. Though this does clear up later as the cast mainly focuses on the same people you have already met, it can make the early chapters and episodes a little bit difficult to follow at times.

That is where we come in as we are going to break down the Jujutsu Kaisen characters guide that you need to know about. Here are all of the people that you should know about in the series at the start, ranging from the students in the series to the teachers to the villains that are causing trouble.

Tokyo Jujutsu High School

The main setting for much of Jujutsu Kaisen is the Tokyo Jujutsu High School that the main character attends in the series. Though the story spends a lot of time outside of the school itself on missions and the like, many of the characters in the cast are involved with this high school in some way.

Students

A large group of the main characters in the series is the high school students who attend Tokyo Jujutsu High School, including the leading protagonist of the series. The high school is divided up into three grades, similar to other Japanese high schools with a very small handful of students in each grade.

Yuji Itadori

One of the three first years at Tokyo Jujutsu High School is Yuji Itadori, who acts as the protagonist for the entire series. Itadori is from Sendai, another city in Japan a few hours from Tokyo, at the beginning of the series. He is a young man who lives with his grandpa, who is the only family that he has.

At the beginning of the series, Itadori joins the Occult Club at his high school and his best friends find a cursed finger item that they mess with. This leads to an encounter with a demon-like curse that changes his life forever, resulting in him consuming the finger to save his friends.

In the process, he is partially possessed by Sukuna, the king of all curses, and they inhabit the same body together. This leads him to Tokyo Jujutsu High School where he learns to control himself as a curse user in his search for the other fingers of Sukuna.

Itadori is a charismatic leader and protagonist who wants to save everyone. And if he cannot save someone, they deserve a proper funeral and death. He is an intriguing hero who has a lot of enemies and people against him, including the very spirit that shares a body with him.

Megumi Fushigoro

The second main character in the series is Megumi Fushigoro. Another first-year himself, he is an experienced sorcerer, unlike Itadori. He is already attending Tokyo Jujutsu High School when he encounters Yuji during the opening story arc for the series.

Fushigoro quickly befriends Yuji during the opening parts of the story, which leads to him vouching for the protagonist when it came time to deal with him. As such, the two become close friends and classmates rather fast.

Fushigoro is quickly becoming one of the most powerful sorcerers in training in the world with a fascinating ability that allows him to manifest spirits to use in battle with his curse energy. These shadows help him fight in combat and make him a force to be reckoned with in the Jujutsu Kaisen world.

Nobara Kugisaki

The third main character in the series and rounding out the group of first years that attend Tokyo Jujutsu High School is Nobara Kugisaki. The only female in the trio, Nobara is a newcomer to the high school alongside Itadori who moved from the countryside of Japan.

What is unique about Nobara’s curse abilities is that she has a straw doll that she uses and manipulates in battle. She can hammer the doll to cause damage to the person that she is fighting and connect with them on a spiritual level. She is shown to be a strong fighter in her own right with the ability to take on cursed spirits with ease.

Yuta Okkotsu

A second-year who attends Tokyo Jujutsu High, Yuta Okkotsu is a fascinating character in the series. This is because he is a protagonist in his own right, starring in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Originally, the series was a one-shot manga that focused on Yuta and his relationship with a childhood friend.

That story was the origin of the series and was eventually considered the prequel to the series. It received an anime film adaptation after the first season of the show ended, telling its story. Yuta is still an important figure in the series, especially in the later parts of the manga.

Panda

A fan favorite in the series is the second-year student Panda. Panda is exactly what his name is: a talking panda. Well, sort of. He has the appearance of a panda but is, in reality, (light spoilers) a form of a cursed corpse. He was created to be this sorcerer of sorts and is a strong fighter with a great heart, despite his bizarre upbringing.

Toge Inumaki

Toge Inumaki is a second-year student at the high school and wears a covering over his mouth. He is a mostly quiet boy who does not say much and when he does finally say something, it is a food ingredient only. This is due to the curse that prevents him from saying anything other than food items or else he will use his powers.

Maki Zen’in

Another second-year student at the school is Maki, a brash and intelligent girl with a unique position in the school. Despite coming from a powerful family in the Jujutsu world, she is unlike every other student in that she cannot harness cursed energy at all.

This also means that she is unable to see curses without the help of special glasses. That said, she is a strong fighter in her own right, using cursed weapons to fight against enemies with her supernatural strength.

Kirara Hoshi

Kirara is one of the only two third-year students and someone who is currently suspended from class. They help run a fight club for sorcerers alongside their pal Kinji.

Kinji Hakari

One of the two third-year students at the high school, he is not one of the active students at the beginning of the story. He has been suspended from school and is a troublemaker in his own right. Despite this, he is a powerful sorcerer and one that could become more powerful than Gojo someday.

Faculty

The high school has teachers and staff members that help to facilitate the students and the next generation of sorcerers. Of the staff, there are two main ones that fans should know about when first jumping into the series.

Satoru Gojo

Satoru Gojo could be seen as the fourth lead character in the series as the teacher for the first-year trio. He might be a young guy himself but he is one of the most powerful sorcerers in the entire world. It is even possible that he is the number one strongest curse user around.

Gojo is the reason that Itadori is still alive and able to attend the school in the first place but this only adds to the hatred that many in the sorcerer realm have for him. Gojo goes against the grain and refuses to abide by what the older sorcerers in the world want to do.

Masamichi Yaga

Masamichi Yaga is the principal and head of the Tokyo Jujutsu High School. An older sorcerer, he has taught Gojo and some of the other older members involved with the school. He is a strong-headed person and someone who takes time to accept them. His power is manipulating dolls, which allows him to do acts like create Panda.

Kyoto Jujutsu High School

The sister school for Tokyo Jujutsu High School is its counterpart on the other side of the country in Kyoto. This school is a rival school with intense competition between the students and faculty alike there. It has its fair share of students across its three grades.

Students

Like its counterpart in Tokyo, there are three years of students at the Kyoto Jujutsu High School. Fans are introduced to this school during the exchange story arc where the two schools compete against one another in a bout of friendly competition.

Arata Nitta

Arata Nitta is the only student in the first year grade at Kyoto Jujutsu High, which puts him even with the lead three characters in the series. He is a healer type of sorcerer but his powers are mostly limited to only assisting with the severity of an injury rather than restoring it completely.

Aoi Todo

Aoi Todo is a third-year student at Kyoto High and one of the most powerful students there. He quickly becomes a fan of Itadori during the exchange event and calls him bro. He also believes that they have known each other since middle school and have been close friends for a while, which may not be true.

Mai Zen’in

Mai is the twin sister of Maki from Tokyo High and, therefore, a fellow second year. However, there is no love between these two sisters as they are vastly different from one another. Unlike Maki, Mai can sense and use cursed energy, allowing her to imbue her sniper rifle bullets with power.

Kokichi Muta

Another second year at Kyoto High is Kokichi Muta, a frail sorcerer who is not able to do much physically. On the other hand, he can possess an unbelievable amount of cursed energy, which he channels into puppets that he can control. He calls his puppets Ultimate Mechamaru.

Kasumi Miwa

Kasumi Miwa is a blue-haired and goofy member of Kyoto High’s second-year class. She uses a sword in battle and has a shadow-cursed energy power that lets her attack instantly within a close distance to her. One of the defining traits of Miwa is the fact that she is a huge fan of Gojo to the point of obsession.

Momo Nishimiya

One of the third years in Kyoto, Momo Nishimiya is a roughly average sorcerer with powers that are best suited to supporting her teammates rather than being a fighter. She can control various weaponry, including the ability to levitate objects. This allows her to fly around on a broomstick similar to a stereotypical witch.

Noritoshi Kamo

The final third year of the bunch is Noritoshi Kamo who is one of the most powerful in the school. He uses a bow in battle with a twist: it uses arrows that are laced with his blood to allow him to manipulate them. This is because his power is controlling his blood using cursed energy.

Faculty

Kyoto Jujutsu High School has its own set of staff members that are tasked with facilitating the students there.

Utahime Iori

Utahime Iori is the notable teacher in the series with a past that is connected to Gojo from when they were in high school. They have a rivalry and love/hate relationship with one another but do seem to care about one another. She is not an exceptionally strong curse user but a smart ally nonetheless.

Yoshinobu Gakuganji

The head of Kyoto High is Yoshinobu Gakuganji. As an older member of the cursed sorcery society, he is stuck in his ways and has a more hostile outlook towards people like Yuji Itadori. He uses a guitar that lets him blast the air with cursed energy in fights.

Villains

Villains are at the heart of Jujutsu Kaisen given that the world is all about cursed energy and the spirits that are secretly roaming around society. With so many different story arcs and organizations that are involved in the Jujutsu Kaisen storyline, there are plenty of villains, both human and cursed.

Sukuna

The primary villain of the series and an ever-present threat is Sukuna. At the start of the story, the main character Yuji consumes the finger that is from Sukuna. He possesses Yuji and the two inhabit the same body for the storyline, which is the crux of the conflict in the series.

Ryomen Sukuna is the King of All Curses and known as the most powerful ever in the history of Japan. With his fingers spread around the country, his goal is to find them all so that he can, hopefully, have control of Yuji’s body. The two have a stalemate of sorts as they both try to work together to survive against the other enemies in the series.

Mahito

One of the major enemies in the series is Mahito, a primary threat who leads an organization of cursed spirits that are bent on destroying the world. Mahito has a disturbing human-like appearance, unlike other spirits, and malice that is dangerous. He is one of the strongest enemies in the series.

Jogo

Jogo is another cursed spirit and one with a strange volcano on top of his head. He is one of the leaders of the group of spirits that Mahito has formed, having an intense and burning passion (literally) to destroy humans. Jogo is a strong spirit with destructive powers using the volcano on his head.

Suguru Geto

Suguru Geto is another villain who has his group. Unlike the other three before him, Geto is a human and a former student at Tokyo Jujutsu High. Not all villains in the series are just spirits as Geto represents but one of the cursed users who have their evil intentions for the world.

Other Characters

That is not all for the Jujutsu Kaisen character’s guide. There are a couple more characters who are in the story that is important to the other characters and the events that happen but do not necessarily fall into the other categories.

This could be because they are not cursed users themselves or they simply have not aligned with any of the other factions in the story. Regardless, they are ones that you should know about.

Wasuke Itadori

Wasuke Itadori is the lone family member that the main hero, Yuji, has left in the world. With most of his family gone, he is raised by his grandfather in their hometown of Sendai, Japan. Wasuke is a kind old man with a loving heart that has raised Yuji to be very similar to him.

It is from his grandfather that Yuji gets his passion for making sure to save people’s lives and help them. Before he moved to Tokyo to join the Jujutsu High School there, Wasuke plays a crucial role in helping to bring out his personality and the goals of Yuji. Yuji loves his grandfather deeply and Wasuke plays a major role in the very beginning of the story.

Junpei Yoshino

Last but certainly not least, we have Junpei Yoshino. This is another character who plays an insanely large role in helping to develop the character of Yuji in one of the first arcs. Junpei is a high school student who lives with his mom and has no friends.

He is bullied often at school, causing him to have a very negative outlook on life. He has a pretty sad backstory leading up to Yuji meeting up but Junpei finds his first real friend in the lead hero. Together, the two teach each other about life and they become very close friends.

Junpei Yoshino is an underrated character in the series and my favorite thus far in both the manga and anime versions. I still think that the story arc that Junpei is introduced in at the beginning of the story is one of the peaks of the series and a few moments since then have reached its heights.

FAQs

Question: Who are the 3 main characters in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Answer: The three main characters in Jujutsu Kaisen are the three first years at Tokyo Jujutsu High School. They are Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushigoro, and Nobara Kugisaki. I would also consider their teacher, Satoru Gojo, to be the fourth main character and an equal lead alongside the trio.

Question: Who is the most popular Jujutsu Kaisen character?

Answer: This is hard to answer, especially since three of the main characters in the series are rather close to one another in terms of popularity. The only real evidence that we have of who the most popular character is comes from a survey that took place in Japan a few years ago.

The problem with this survey was that it was when the manga series was still relatively new at the time and the anime series had not yet aired. Much of the story was still early on and the demographic for the survey only included those living in Japan so it is not representative of the whole world.

At the time, though, Yuji Itadori was the most popular character with Megumi Fushigoro just behind him in terms of votes. And in third place was their teacher, Satoru Gojo, who was also pretty close. Overall, I would still say that these three are likely the most popular characters in the series.

If I had to give it to one of them, though, I would likely give it to either Yuji Itadori or Gojo. Itadori is the easy choice since he is the hero in the story but Gojo has been ramping up in popularity since the anime adaptation came out, mostly because he greatly appeals to both men and women alike.

Question: Who are the 3rd years in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Answer: Several third-year students are the upperclassmen to the main three protagonists. The third years at Tokyo Jujutsu High School are Kinji Hakari and Kirara Hoshi. That said, some third-year students are at Kyoto Jujutsu High School, which is the sister school and also a rival institution.

In Kyoto, three third years attend that school. They are Itadori’s newfound friend and best bro, Aoi Todo, Momo Nishimiya, and Noritoshi Kamo. The two high schools are rather small in class size due to the hidden nature of curse energy so that is why the grades only have a few students in each of them.

Question: Who is Satoru Gojo’s crush?

Answer: There is no officially confirmed romantic love interest for Itadori’s teacher, Satoru Gojo, at this time. There is the chance that he will have a romance in the future of the series but that is unconfirmed for now. That said, this has not stopped many fans from, of course, shipping him with various characters that they think would work.

There are two main possibilities if he ever does have a relationship with someone, which is not guaranteed in the first place. The first of these is his fellow faculty member and teacher, Utahime Iori. Utahime works at the Kyoto branch of the Jujutsu High School and is someone who knows Gojo well from his past.

This is because both Gojo and Utahime were well-acquainted with one another when they were in high school. They have good chemistry with one another and a history that exists so it makes sense that there could be a possible romance between them at some point.
That said, the one possible love interest that much of the fandom has latched onto is Kasumi Miwa. Controversially, she is a second-year high school student at Kyoto while Gojo is an adult and a teacher. However, this has not at all stopped the fandom.
This is because Kasumi obsesses over Gojo as a fan of hers but it does not help that there have been a few scenes and lines from Gojo that play up the tension between them. It is likely just because of the possibly arrogant and narcissistic nature of the best curse sorcerer around but we will have to wait and see for now.

Question: Who is the strongest in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Answer: The strongest curse user in all of Jujutsu Kaisen is likely to be none other than the one and only Satoru Gojo. He is mentioned several times in the manga and anime series as one of the most powerful in the world, and this is likely the case.
Despite being in his 20s and a young guy himself, he is a curse sorcerer prodigy who has quickly become the best in the world. This is seen in the few fights that he engages in, in the series where he is clearly on a whole new level far above everyone else in the entire series.

Conclusion
