The moody, dark tone of Jujutsu Kaisen isn’t just for its artstyle and monsters. The entire cast of characters, minus a couple, are brooding and serious people. One of the prime examples of that is the secondary protagonist of the series, Megumi Fushiguro.
He is the epitome of that emo anime dude, and I adore it, as he matches my aesthetic nicely. That is why it is an honor to be able to cover him in this Megumi Fushiguro guide.
In this Megumi Fushiguro guide, you’ll find out everything you need to know about the summoner. As my second-favorite character from Jujutsu Kaisen, after his loving teacher Gojo-sensei, Megumi is that classic depressing person who is so negative all the time.
He fits the vibes I tried to give off every day in middle school, making him an instant fan favorite for me and many others. That’s all before including the immense powers he has, as you’ll see below.
Bottom Line Up Front
Megumi Fushiguro is, by and large, the secondary protagonist of the dark Jujutsu Kaisen manga and anime series. His powers are unrivaled as a summoner who uses demonic spirits to aid him in battle. He is a mostly negative person, being moody the majority of the time and not allowing himself to get close to people.
His mysterious past and enigmatic future are some of the core story beats in the ongoing series. Megumi is also consistently at the top of the fan-favorite character polls for his ironically charming and depressing personality.
Megumi Fushiguro Overview
Vegeta, Sasuke, Killua. What do they all have in common? They are essentially the second heroes of their respective shounen series after the main character. They have associations with blue or darker colors and are generally seen as harsher, sometimes edgier heroes that toe the line between good and evil at times.
Their questionable acts define these so-called anti-heroes as sometimes favorites over the actual protagonists. Well, it just so happens that while the aforementioned three come from much older series, such is not the case with the more recent Jujutsu Kaisen.
But even still, they have a similar archetype secondary protagonist in Megumi Fushiguro. He embodies a lot of traits that are seen in characters like Vegeta and Sasuke, right down to his blue outfit motif with jet-black hair and the darker attitude that he has going on.
Arguably, though, Megumi is even more mysterious than those others in that he keeps nearly everything to himself. Unlike others who at least showed affection to their counterparts, Megumi is an even tougher nut to crack.
His relationships are seemingly shallow, his motivations are unknown, and Megumi doesn’t often let anyone in. This stone-cold personality makes him one of the best characters in Jujutsu Kaisen and certainly my favorite. I know I’m not the only one in that regard, as he is consistently among the top characters in the series, according to many community members.
Fushiguro is one of the three freshmen at Tokyo Jujutsu High School and the only member until the main character, Yuji, and later Nobara, join the class. See as the lone wolf sort of character, he manifests this in his powerful abilities that involve summoning a demonic wolf companion in battles.
Appearance
Megumi Fushiguro, like the other members of the Jujutsu Kaisen cast, has a mostly simplistic look. For the most part, he has a rather basic brooding but handsome anti-hero appearance. For starters, he has a sharp face that is serious all the time and rarely breaks.
His outfit is a standard school uniform for the high school that is a dark blue, almost black color throughout it, from top to bottom. He has long, somewhat baggy pants that match the top long-sleeve jacket. The only defining part of his appearance is his ultra-spiky hair which is always standing up straight.
His signature blackish blue hair helps to add to his darker blue motif, which is the complete opposite of the more red and black-themed Yuji Itadori, his friend and classmate.
Key Moments in Jujutsu Kaisen
Megumi Fushiguro is largely regarded as the secondary protagonist of the Jujutsu Kaisen series. While he is not the de facto main character — that honor goes to Yuji Itadori — much of the events in the story follow Megumi’s perspective.
We see this, especially in a few sequences and scenes in which Yuji is either incapacitated or not in that particular scene. Because of this, Megumi mostly has to do with all of the significant events that happen throughout the ongoing manga and its anime adaptation.
For this next section, I will go over some of the critical moments and fights you should know about when it comes to Megumi Fushiguro. Because of the sensitive nature of this topic, I highly recommend turning away now if you haven’t caught up with this series yet.
I will be full-on spoiling some of the arcs and moments that come later on in the series but avoiding most of the fates of characters that aren’t Megumi himself. That said, these are massive spoilers regardless, so turn away now. This warning is doubly so for anime viewers since I will dive into some later arcs that haven’t been adapted yet.
Joining Tokyo Jujutsu High School
Megumi Fushiguro’s story begins before the start of the main series. Through a series of flashbacks and notes from the character, we know that he grew up in a troubled environment. He is a member of the Zenin Family, which has side characters like Maki and Mai in it, too.
This isn’t immediately known to the viewer, though, because Megumi was disowned by the family and raised by a different set of people, including his father, Toji Fushiguro, and sister, Tsumiki. After some tragic events occurred with his family, he ended up in the care of the Tokyo Jujutsu High School as a first-year student there.
It is here that Megumi trains to use his abilities properly so that he can be an effective Jujutsu Sorcerer. He is seen by many of the faculty, including his teacher Gojo, as one of the most promising young students in his generation and at the high school.
Growing as a Jujutsu Sorcerer
Soon after his start at the high school, Megumi runs into a case that involves a school in the countryside of Japan where an occult club found one of the Sukuna, the demon king, fingers. In the process, he meets the protagonist, Yuji Itadori, and helps him to survive both the encounter and eat the finger.
Megumi is able to help Yuji overcome his tribulations and join him as his first classmate in the freshman class at Tokyo Jujutsu High. Together, the two go on several missions together and, later, with their third classmate, Nobara, to take down various cursed spirits.
This leads to an unfortunate circumstance in which Megumi directly confronts Sukuna inside of Yuji, and they make a pact together that helps save Yuji from his fate. This connects the two protagonists and the cursed spirit king together, leading to more collaborations.
This culminates in the Shibuya incident in which Megumi plays a massive role in taking down the enemies there. In the process, he confronts his reborn father and sees his sister finally awaken from her coma.
Leading His Clan
In the more recent arc of Jujutsu Kaisen’s manga, Megumi Fushiguro, along with the rest of the main cast, was thrust into the Culling Game. The horrifying game sees sorcerers from across Japan fighting against one another.
Before the game began, Megumi was given the honor of becoming the new head of the Zenin Family, even though they disowned him in the first place. Competing as the clan’s leader in the Culling Game, he has to deal with the fact that his step-sister, Tsumiki, is finally awake from her coma but is now a forced participant there, too.
This is the extent of Megumi Fushiguro’s role in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga up until this point in time. The Culling Game arc is still ongoing when writing this, with Megumi continuing his fight in the colonies and against the villains pitting everyone against one another.
That said, the series is supposed to end relatively soon (subject to change), so Megumi’s conclusion with Yuji and whatever Sukuna has planned should come to fruition soon enough.
Special Abilities Explained
Among the characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, Megumi Fushiguro is one of the most powerful. This is especially the case when it comes to the next generation of Jujutsu Sorcerers that are currently studying as students. His powers come down to a couple of key areas.
He is decent enough when it comes to physical combat, but the reality is he isn’t like some of his fellow sorcerers. Unlike characters like Yuji, Megumi isn’t nearly that good at hand-to-hand combat and directly fighting using his own strength.
As such, the core of Fushiguro’s powers comes from the immense cursed energy he possesses and how he turns it into abilities he can use. This is divided into two categories: his basic powers and his ultimate ability. Keep in mind that there are some slight spoilers ahead for those who haven’t caught up with the manga, so watch out, anime fans.
Shikigami Summoning
The primary skill that Megumi uses in combat is the Ten Shadows Technique, which is passed down from members of the Zenin Clan he’s part of. This cursed energy ability has to do with using the spirits of curses he can summon in the battles to help him out.
At first, we mainly see a dog/wolf spirit that he summons in combat as his most trusted companion and cute little pupper. But it turns out that his Shikigami (cursed spirits) go far beyond just summoning a pack of hounds to help him out in battle.
He is also seen summoning other cursed spirits, such as a snake, a toad, and more. His skills expand over the course of the series, and his companions grow in power, too. Unfortunately, these summoned fiends have a limited amount of health, leading to them having to retreat when defeated in battle. As such, there is a limit to what Megumi can do in combat if he loses all of his companions.
Chimera Shadow Garden
The ultimate ability of Megumi Fushiguro is his Domain Expansion. This is the final ability for most sorcerers, and his domain is known as the Chimera Shadow Garden. It ties directly back into his Shikigami summoning technique, summoning an area around him and his opponents.
In this particular domain, the entire ground is covered in this goopy-slime-like substance. This is basically like his own summoning area where he can continuously bring out more and more of his companions, using the liquid to surround all of his foes and decimate them all at once.
It enhances how much he can do with his summoning abilities and can change the fate of an entire battle.
Anime Voice Actor
Who you hear voicing Megumi Fushiguro in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime depends on which version you listen to. If you watch the English dub version, which isn’t bad actually, you’ll hear the excellent Robbie Daymond voicing Megumi.
Daymond brings an intriguing sense of heroism and maturity to the character. If you want to check him out in other properties, I adored Daymond’s roles as Goro Akechi (the best character in Persona 5), Tuxedo Mask in the recent Sailor Moon adaptations, and the villainous Chrollo in Hunter x Hunter.
On the other hand, you might be like me and stick to the original Japanese dub for Jujutsu Kaisen (mainly to not miss out on the latest episodes as soon as they come out). In this case, you’ll hear the young and relatively new Yuma Ichida.
Despite his younger career voice acting, he’s already nailed some impressive roles, such as Ash Lynx in Banana Fish, Kyo in Fruits Basket, and Kawaki in the ongoing Boruto.
Key Relationships
Megumi Fushiguro is a tough character who lets almost no one in, but that doesn’t stop him from having some relationships. It just so happens that most of his connections are at arm’s length at best. However, the main relationships he has come down to his schoolmates and enemies.
His step-sister is someone who seems to be quite close to him. She seems like one of the only family members he cares about, and this appears to be a central focus for the character in the manga moving forward.
On the other end of the spectrum is his father, Toji, who appears to be a massive thorn in Megumi’s side. He doesn’t seem to be the best father, and it should come as no surprise what their relationship ends up like (I’ll let you find that part out on your own).
From there, it mainly comes down to Fushiguro’s three school-related relationships. Yuji Itadori could be considered the closest thing to his best friend, and even then, it is more of a rivalry or annoyance than anything else. It is likely that Megumi somewhat cares about Yuji, but he has a harder time showing it than even other similar characters in the past, like Vegeta or Sasuke.
This could be partially due to Sukuna, the cursed spirit king inside of Yuji. The relationship between Sukuna and Megumi is a strange one, with the latter seeing him as the enemy while the former sees something special in Megumi. This relationship is quite mysterious and will take time to pan out.
Nobara is the other freshman classmate for Megumi, and they have a mostly amicable relationship or, dare I say, friendship. Oddly enough, they don’t have too many interactions with one another despite being in so many scenes together.
Lastly, Megumi’s teacher, Satoru Gojo, is like a pseudo-father figure to Megumi, helping him to forge his own path. But even then, he seems to keep his closest ally at arm’s length like everyone else.
FAQs
Question: Who is Megumi Fushiguro in love with?
Answer: There is no confirmed love interest for Megumi Fushiguro. My personal answer, for now, is that Megumi Fushiguro is in love with no one that we’ve met up until this point. There are quite a few ships, like Megumi with Nobara and Yuji, but none of them make much sense.
Question: Is Megumi in love with Yuji?
Answer: No, I don’t think Megumi is in love with Yuji. Sure, they have a sometimes rivalry-based relationship that could be construed as romantic, but that’s stretching it at best. They are simply good friends until we see more from them to indicate that there could be romantic feelings.
Question: Why is Sukuna interested in Megumi?
Answer: As for why Sukuna is interested in Megumi, this is currently unknown. However, it is unlikely to be due to the vow that the two have with one another. It could be that the relationship between Yuji and Megumi or the latter’s power could be helpful to Sukuna in the future when he enacts his ultimate evil plan.
Question: Is Megumi Fushiguro straight?
Answer: It is unknown if Megumi Fushiguro is straight or not. His sexual orientation hasn’t been confirmed up until this point in the manga.
Who to Check Out Next in Jujutsu Kaisen
Megumi Fushiguro is one of the best characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, and few even come close to matching him. While I like the main character, Yuji, Megumi is a more mysterious and intriguing character overall.
However, in the end, there is still one more person who triumphs over Megumi every single day. Without a doubt, the best character in the entire dark fantasy manga and anime series has to be Megumi’s teacher, Satoru Gojo. While there is room to argue that he’s just a younger, cooler, and more handsome Kakashi from Naruto, there is more to him than meets the beautiful blue eyes, as you can see here.
