L Lawliet, a skinny, tall, enigmatic man with messy black hair and dark circles, is the world-recognized detective with secretive and mysterious nature. He accepts the hard-core challenge of catching the mass murderer known as Kira. In his investigation, L suspects Light Yagami and aims to prove that Light is Kira.

“Kira is childish, and he hates losing. You guessed it, I’m also childish and hate losing.”

L Lawliet, also known as Ryuzaki, is the heroic main antagonist of the first half of the Death Note anime and manga series and the overarching post-mortem antagonist of the remaining half. He also serves as the titular protagonist of the Death Note film.

Light Yagami

Light Yagami, son of Soichiro Yagami, is a hard-working, naturally talented, and born genius. He is admiringly intelligent and has outstanding problem-solving skills. Light is a competent planner who comes with fantastic scenarios.

“This world is rotten and those who are making it rot deserve to die. Someone has to do it, so why not me? Even if it means sacrificing my mind and soul, it’s worth it.”

Light has a strong sense of justice like his father, Soichiro, but this is quickly distorted after being stained by the death note power. He believes that the world is rotten, and his Death Note is the only means he can free the world from evil people.

“I am justice! I protect the innocent and those who fear evil. I’m the one that will become the God of a new world that everyone desires!”

Light Yagami, also known as Kira, is the main protagonist of the Death Note series. His primary goal is to become the God of the new world by creating a new world free of unjustness and inhabited solely by people he considers honest and kind. He considers his actions the ultimate sacrifice to help the world even after knowing the criminality of murder.

Ryuk

“I didn’t choose you. Don’t you see this is all just an accident? You actually thought you were chosen because you’re so smart or something? Don’t be so vain. It just happened to fall around here and you just happen to pick it up, and that’s all there is to it.”

Ryuk is a Shinigami who got bored with staying and spending time in the Shinigami Realm. To relieve his boredom and entertain himself, he steals a second Death Note and drops it down the Human World for someone to find. This Death Note is then found by Light Yagami, who uses it to purify the world of evil and injustice, becoming a source of entertainment for Ryuk.

“For me, apples are like cigarettes and liquor for humans. If I’m deprived, I go into withdrawals.”

Ryuk has a considerable liking for apples. According to him, his apple fondness is equivalent to the addiction of cigarettes and alcohol to humans. At one point, Ryuk showed Misa Amane the Shinigami Realm apples, which were withered and tasted like sand. That is why he likes human world apples better.

Misa Amane

Misa has been mentally tormented by witnessing her parents murdered right before her eyes. We can not say how much this trauma has affected her psychologically. Still, in the series, Rem states that she has gone through severe depression after discovering that the murderer of her parents was acquitted of the crime.

The Second Kira, Misa Amane, possesses the shinigami eyes, allowing her to see the person’s name and lifespan above their head. The Shinigami eyes make killing people much easier with the Death Note. When she found out that Kira had killed the murderer of her parents, she became delighted and went on the search to thank Kira.

Rem

“Humans are such ugly creatures.”

Rem is an anti-villainous antagonist of the Death Note anime series and manga. She is a Shinigami that guards and assists Misa Amane. However, her stance is primarily unethical; she only desires to help Misa Amane with no concern about how evil her actions may get.

“If you do anything that results in this girl’s death, the first thing I’ll do is write your name in my death note. I will kill you. I’m sure you realize that I can see her lifespan. If she happens to die before that time, I’ll know it was you who killed her.”

Rem has two Death Notes, one of them was of Gelus, who sacrificed himself in the love of Misa to kill her destined murderer. Rem gave his Death Note to Misa Amane since he saved her life. She is happily ready to sacrifice her life to protect Misa, evidenced by her threat to kill Light Yagami.

Near

“If you can’t beat the game, if you can’t solve the puzzle, you’re nothing but a loser.” The younger L’s successor and later the head of the Special Provision of Kira, Near, was raised in Watari’s orphanage in Winchester, England. After L’s death, Near starts his investigation of the Kira case, gathering proof to hunt for Kira. Like L, Near suspects that Light Yagami is Kira.

“What is right from wrong? What is good from evil? Nobody can truly distinguish between them. Even if there was a god. Now, supposing a god and his world existed, even then I’d stop and think for myself. I’d decide for myself whether his teachings are right or wrong. After all, I am just the same as you. I put faith in my own convictions as to what I believe is right, and consider them to be righteous.” 

Near is straight-faced, but he often smirks when he gets something right. With his highly calm and stable personality, N is somewhat devious and isn’t beyond using tactics that are “hardly within the law,” as he “values results above all else.”

Mello

“In the end, there is no greater motivation than revenge.” 

The older L’s successor, Mello, was raised at the orphanage of gifted children, Wammy’s House in Winchester, England. Mello refused to work together with Near to capture Kira while highlighting their differences. Eventually, he pursued help from the Mafia soon after leaving the Watari’s orphanage.

“It’s time I started living my own life.” 

Mello is the victim of an inferiority complex. He does not want to accept being the second most intelligent and genius person in Wammy’s House. Mello is willing to do whatever it takes to capture Kira. Not because of his sense of justice but due to his obsession to prove that he is the world’s greatest detective and the worthy successor to L.
