Manga and anime have etched a mark in pop culture, and it’s no surprise why. Throughout the years, I have seen and read a lot of anime and manga. One of my personal favorites is Attack on Titan. Its increasing popularity is attributed to its well-written plot, detailed world-building, and extensive character list.

With a massive fanbase, Attack on Titan characters has become a global icon in the world of anime and manga. Of course, every character has its fandom—be it the main or the supporting characters.

Among the many well-loved (or hated) characters is Ymir, not the Founding Titan, Ymir Fritz. But Ymir, the previous inheritor of the Jaw Titan. While her character was relatively short-lived, it played a significant role in the Battle of Trost District arc. It is also impressive to see how Ymir slowly opened up about her previous life and motivations as the story unfolds.

Are you interested to know more about Ymir? I’ve got your back. In this guide, I will discuss everything there is to know about Ymir, including her personality, appearance, background, and even the most exciting trivia facts about her. Warning: Spoilers alert!

Bottom Line Up Front

Ymir is one of the most popular supporting characters in Attack on Titan. She was the previous inheritor of the Jaw Titan after Marcel Galliard. She gained a lot of attention when many fans were interested to know the real score between Historia and Ymir. While her love story was not elaborated in the show, it’s pretty obvious that Ymir has a deep infatuation for Historia.

Other than her love interest, Ymir became a breakthrough character as the story progresses. Her development is undeniably well-written and executed. She was always unfazed by any challenges as she was empowered by both a sense of pride and duty.

At A Glance: Ymir’s Information

Who Is Ymir?

“I, too, used to believe that the world would be a better place if I hadn’t been born. I was hated merely for the fact that I existed, and I died for the happiness of many people.” – Ymir

This quote probably resonates with the whole life story of Ymir. She is among the most pivotal characters of Attack on Titan, Season 2. Her character has sparked interest in the entire AOT community.

Ymir (ユミル Yumiru) was among the graduates of the 104th Training Corps. She was trained together with Eren, Armin, and Mikasa on Paradis Island. After graduating from the Training Corps, Ymir became part of the Survey Corps. She was actively involved in direct Titan combat and was tasked with exploring outside the Walls.

Being part of the Survey Corps, Ymir was highly skilled in using the Vertical Maneuvering Equipment. She is exceptionally tenacious and quick-witted when it comes to making tough decisions. More importantly, Ymir’s cold nature and air of arrogance were simply a mask of how she truly feels about the world.

Ymir was among the very first Titan Shifters shown in the series. She could transform into the Jaw Titan. Interestingly, she was also part of the first people who knew about Titans’ existence and true nature.

Differentiating Ymir and Ymir Fritz

If you’re watching Attack on Titan for the very first time, it can be quite overwhelming and confusing—mainly because there are a dozen characters you need to know. It seems like Game of Thrones but on steroids! When I first read the manga, I got easily confused about the names and the character designs, considering Isayama’s art style. Well, those were different times! Now, you could easily search between who’s who.

To give you a more detailed comparison, Ymir, without the last name, was simply a lowly beggar with no home. She was not in any way related to the royal family. But instead, a man found her and named her “Ymir” after the almighty ancestor. This means that Ymir’s name is just a phony Ymir Fritz, the first Founding Titan.

On the other hand, Ymir Fritz (ユミル・フリッツ Yumiru Furittsu) was the first person bestowed by the power of the Titans. Despite her powers, she remained a slave to the Eldian King.

The King used her powers to bring wealth and prosperity to Elidan while annihilating the rest of the world. After 13 years as the Founding Titan, Ymir Fritz eventually died protecting the King—this also prompted the “Curse of Ymir.”

Ymir: Appearance, Personality, Quotes, and More

Appearance

Human form

Ymir has average looks. She was a tall, young girl who donned short, shaggy black hair. Her hairstyle is probably one of the most noticeable things about her face since it is the focal point of her deep-set gray eyes. Typically, she wears her hair in a low ponytail with a white tie.

When Ymir became a part of the Survey Corps, she wore the most recognizable brown jacket with the sigil, “Wing of Freedom .” Ymir wore the complete uniform with her signature dark long sleeve shirt, knee-high combat boots, and white pair of pants.

Before Ymir wore his chic-masculine aesthetic, she was revered as a goddess of a cult who believed in Ymir as their god. As the goddess, she portrayed a more feminine character by wearing a pale halter dress with a belt. She even wore her hair down to complete the look.

Jaw Titan form

Ymir is extremely popular for inheriting the powers of the Jaw Titan. However, her Titan look was relatively different from any other Titan Shifter. The Jaw Titan is considerably smaller than most Titans, even smaller than a lot of Pure Titans.

Ymir’s Jaw Titan only stands five meters tall; she also dons thick rugged fringes, round and deep-set dark eyes. One feature that also stood out is her small pointed ears and significantly long arms. Adding to her brute force and physique are her sharp fangs and claws.

Interestingly, her Jaw Titan’s body is not evenly proportioned since her head is enormous compared to the size of her limbs. Unlike the Female Titan, she does not possess any notable feminine features like the Cart Titan.

Pure Titan form

Being one of the Subjects of Ymir Fritz, Ymir was transformed into a Pure Titan as a punishment for her misdeeds. She aimlessly walked as a Pure Titan for over sixty years, void of memory and emotions. Her Pure Titan form looks quite similar to her Jaw Titan; her head is also larger than her whole body.

On the other hand, her upper limbs are significantly longer than her lower limbs; her body is also remarkably thinner as her rib cage is more evident before eating Marcel Galliard. She also had those prominent eyes and a nose. However, her teeth were dull compared to her Jaw Titan form.

Personality

At first glance, Ymir seemed to be self-serving, cynical, and uncooperative; at times, she even provoked others, which often led to confrontations and fights. Eventually, she revealed her softer side, especially with Historia/Krista.

However, Ymir was always kind and selfless when she was younger; she stood for what she believed in and took full responsibility for the Eldian cult’s existence. Aside from that, she was willing to sacrifice herself for Historia.

Because of Ymir’s conscious guilt after devouring Marcel, she decided to surrender herself to the Marley government. While she was always level-headed, her pride got in the way of her decision-making—yet this trait clearly defines her character. I have a love-hate feeling about this character. Ymir’s personality is quite complex yet very palpable to a larger audience.

Quotes

Ymir is extremely popular despite being a supporting character. She is among the Attack on Titan characters that have amassed a considerable fan base, and I could see a dozen reasons why.

When I saw her character development, I was in awe of her growth and looked forward to how her character will create a significant plot point in the story. However, Ymir’s character was short-lived; she only appeared for the first two seasons and faced her untimely death.

Ymir’s legacy lives on through her clever anecdotes and profound messages despite her brief appearance. Here’s an extensive list of some of my favorites:

  • “Just because you want other people to think of you as someone who’d die for another. Dragging someone else to his death just for that. Only a bad girl would do that, right?”
  • “I want to survive and see her again. As a person, I’m lower than SH*t, but she knows that, and she smiles kindly at me anyway.”
  • “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I will always love you, no matter what. No matter how much you’ll hurt me. No matter how hard you try to break me down, my love for you is too strong, and I can never see myself hating you.”
  • “Do you always want to live hiding behind the mask you put up for the sake of others? You’re you, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
  • “You’re going to kill yourself. The ultimate act of submission. Is that how much you want to please the people who treated you like a nuisance? Why are you trying to hurt yourself? If your will is that strong, then shouldn’t you be able to change your fate?”
  • My personal favorite: “There was one thing I wished for with all my heart. If I’m ever given a second chance in life, I want to live for only myself. That is my sincere wish.”

These words present Ymir’s true persona, motivations, and aspirations. They also show her relatable nature, making her one of the most exciting characters in the series.

Abilities

Human Skills

There’s no doubt that Ymir was extremely skilled in combat. She has superior physical ability, and it shows in how she wields her weapons. Even Keith Shadis saw potential in her; if only she didn’t slack off during the training, she would have been part of the ton ten graduates.

While Ymir was good in combat and initiative, she suffered in working with a team. She is very picky when it comes to collaboration. She would rather work alone than with her peers.

Power of the Titans

When Ymir inherited the Jaw Titan through devouring Marcel Galliard in the Year 845, she gained the “Power of the Titans.” As a result of being a Titan Shifter, she possessed powers, such as:

Immense Speed and Agility

Because of her small size, Ymir can quickly move through the narrowest spaces and climb the high walls. Her nimbleness proved to be a great advantage against other enormous Titans. She can effortlessly reach their nape while using her claws and fangs to hit her enemies.

However, her size might also pose a significant threat as more powerful Titans quickly overpowered her in the battle at the Utgard Castle.

Quick Regenerative Abilities

One of the most practical skills shown by Ymir’s Jaw Titan is its quick regenerative abilities. This has been demonstrated multiple times after battle, where she automatically healed and recuperated any injuries within seconds. More than that, she has also quickly regrown her entire limbs at the battle of Utgard. So, it’s no surprise that she can fight so brazenly because she can regenerate any injuries in a matter of hours or even minutes.

Communication and Speech

Most Titan Shifters, even those most powerful ones, are not capable of forming words while transformed as Titans. However, Ymir was skilled at communicating even in her Titan state. While she is not as fluent as Zeke Yeager’s Beast Titan, Ymir used this ability wisely and made sure that she could help pass on effective combat strategies during battle.

Partial Transformation

This ability is unique to the Jaw Titan. Using this ability, Ymir partially emerged from the nape of her Jaw Titan. This gave her the leverage to interact with her peers without getting highly exhausted because of excessive transformation.

Background and History

Ymir has quite a complex background. She was just a nameless Eldian girl living in the streets of Marley, begging for alms to survive. However, the tables had turned for her when a man took her in; she was then named “Ymir,” eponymous to their ancestor “Ymir Fritz,” and became a cult goddess.

She was praised by several Eldians who believed in her pseudo-powers and royal bloodline. Because of this, she succumbed to the role because it brought hope and happiness to the people. Ymir knew full well that there would be consequences to these actions.

When the Public Security Authority discovered this malicious group, the man who took her in lied and mentioned that he too was deceived by her. However, Ymir chose to stand her ground and role. So, she was arrested by the authorities and stoned by angry citizens.

In the end, Ymir was taken to the border of Paradis Island; as punishment, she was forcibly turned into a Pure Titan. She spent nearly sixty years wandering outside Wall Maria as a Titan until she encountered the Marleyan Warriors Reiner Braun, Bertolt Hoover, Annie Leonhart, and Marcel Galliard. r

The Warriors were starting their mission to infiltrate Wall Maria. However, Ymir attacked them and even reached to devour Reiner. In a split second, Marcel pushed Reiner and sacrificed himself. Ymir ate Marcel instead; she woke up in a field witnessing strange light formations in the sky and realized she was free once again.

Once Ymir regained her human form, she traveled straight to the Walls. She became a rogue, sneaking about, spying on others, and surviving as an experienced thief. Because of the nature of her activities, she overheard a conversation between several members of the Church of the Walls about an illegitimate child of royal descent named “Krista Lenz.” When she learned this information, she was eager to join and enlisted in the military to get to know Krista/Historia.

Soon after, Ymir died when she chose to return to Marley with Reiner and Bertholt. Her choice was mainly influenced by her feeling indebted to the borrowed life she had by eating Marcel. She was consumed by Marcel’s younger brother, Porco, who inherited the Jaw Titan.

Interesting Trivia Facts About Ymir

Ymir was in the Top 20 Most Popular Characters

While many AOT fans know that Ymir is a popular character, others still find it surprising that Ymir is among the list of the most famous characters in AOT. According to the First Character Popularity Poll, she got the eleventh spot, higher than Erwin Smith and Bertolt Hoover.

Consequently, her rank dropped to the thirteenth spot in the Second and Fourth Character Popularity Poll. But, she continued to remain at the top of the polls.

Her name has an interesting meaning

Isayama has always been creative in choosing names for many characters in Attack on Titan. And Ymir’s is no different. Her name is derived from an ancient being in Norse Mythology. Interestingly, such a being is also the progenitor of all jötnar (giants), just like the real Ymir, who was the Founding Titan.

Isayama drew freckles on her face for a reason

Ymir evidently has dark freckles on her face in the manga. However, this might not be as prominent in the anime series. These freckles symbolize the social status of Ymir. Isayama intentionally put these freckles to make her look like a commoner and differentiate her from royalty.

Ymir and Krista’s personalities are polar opposites

Your first impression of Ymir will either be: she’s too harsh; she looks too sardonic and mean, or she’s just a hardheaded and selfish prick. Well, I also believe all this before learning about her background and history. However, it seems to me that Ymir’s true persona is more selfless and quite emotional than she portrays. This was perfectly in contrast to Krista’s sweet girl appearance with darker, depressing undertones.

Ymir’s Jaw Titan doesn’t possess similar features as her human form

One thing you’d notice about Ymir’s Jaw Titan is how it lacked any kind of similarity to her human form, unlike most of the Titan Shifters. This might be because the character design for Ymir’s Jaw Titan honed in on the concept of her Pure Titan Form. You might see similarities to her Pure Titan and Jaw Titan forms, specifically their disproportionate bodies.

FAQs

Question: Why did Ymir’s Pure Titan eat Marcel?

Answer: All Pure Titans lose their sense of being sentient; they are incapable of thinking and controlling their movements. Often, they aimlessly wander around and wait when a more powerful Titan Shifter summons them.
Despite this, they are subconsciously eager to regain their humanity and return to their original form, where they can have complete control of their bodies. This is mainly the reason why Ymir’s Pure Titan devoured humans, as she was instinctively aware that the only way to return to humans was by consuming one of the Nine Titan Shifters.

Question: Is Ymir a vengeful character?

Answer: You could quickly assume that Ymir is out there to get ahead and take revenge for the things that happened to her. However, Ymir was forgiving and resentful. She even decided to surrender herself upon knowing that she had devoured one of the Marleyan Warriors.

Question: Did Ymir come back in Season 4?

Answer: Unfortunately, no! While the story didn’t clearly state Ymir’s fate in the story, Historia/Krista’s memory suggested that a Pure Titan killed her. This was Historia’s vision upon reading Ymir’s letter and memory.
In her last moments, she was tied up just like Eren. This scene was a preparation for the ritual of devouring the Titan inheritor’s body. The scene doesn’t reveal much, but it’s safe to conclude that Porco consumed Ymir’s body and became the next Jaw Titan. It only means that Ymir is gone for good and won’t be coming back for the fourth season.

Question: Does Eren love Historia?

Answer: There’s no concrete evidence about Eren’s affection for Historia, but they show mutual respect and admiration for others. Many fans begin theorizing that they’d end up with each other to continue the royal bloodline, yet this might not be the case.

Question: Are Ymir and Historia a couple?

Answer: Yes, they are! Manga creator Hajime Isayama has confirmed this in an interview with Crunchyroll at Animagic in Germany. He mentioned that he wrote the two characters (Ymir and Historia) as a couple and appreciated any fan-fic and self-published works (doujinshi) about the two of them.

Bottom line: Ymir is Indeed a Fan Favorite!

Ymir is one of my favorite Attack on Titan characters. I like her for a lot of things, but most importantly for her grit and commitment. She stands true to her words and honors what she says. It’s pretty refreshing to see her character in the show.

While she seems pretentious and cunning, she is an incredible friend and reliable combatant. It was sad to bid goodbye to her character, but she was a telling person worthy of praise. How about you? Do you like or hate Ymir? Whatever you feel towards her, I hope this guide gave you a better perspective and a glimpse of her in Attack on Titan.
