There is absolutely no way one can ever give enough introduction to the epic that is Naruto. Of course, this series doesn’t even need an introduction, as everyone knows the tale of Naruto Uzumaki. Be it Naruto himself, his teammates, his sensei, or anyone from Konohagakure, the viewers grow fond of each and every character as the story proceeds (Danzo being an exception, of course!).

There are more than 30 prominent characters in the series, and most of them are the classmates of Naruto Uzumaki, our famous and beloved lead. The rookies introduced at the beginning of the Chunin exams in Naruto season 2 are the kids that finally take over the entire series with their might. The best part- each one of them has its own character development arc.

Even though Team 7 is the most popular team in the series, there is one more which grabs the viewers’ attention- Team 10.

Team 10 is led by Asuma Sarutobi, the son of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. It consists of three exceptional shinobi who are second to none and have their own unique characteristics. These are Shikamaru Nara, Ino Yamanaka, and Choji Akimichi. They are most famous for their Ino-Shika-Cho formation, which is passed down from generations between the three clans.

This article will talk about one of the most underrated characters of this team. This is Choji Naruto guide.

The Life of Choji

Even though Choji was born to the 15th head of the Akimichi clan, he was always a timid boy. Since his childhood, he was looked down by his peers. They refused to play Ninja with him because he was too slow.

It was during one of these games when Choji first met Shikamaru. After being denied a place in the squad for the game, Choji leaves to go sit on a roof and talk to his father about how people make fun of the Akimichi Clan. This is when Shikamaru shows up on the same roof, leaving the Ninja game squad.

Shikamaru tells Choji that the roof is his favorite place to look at the clouds and asks Choji if he would look at the clouds with him. Choji offers Shikamaru some snacks, and this is how Shikacho bromance begins.

Choji vs. Jirobo

Choji grew up like a normal kid in Konoha. He made friends with Naruto and others in the Ninja Academy. He became a member of the Konoha 11. They are the collective shinobi from Naruto’s generation, including Kakashi Hatake’s Team 7, Asuma’s Team 10, Kurenai’s Team 8, and Might Guy’s Team Guy.

There are so many good characters in the series that not everyone gets a spotlight on them. Choji got his first moment to shine in his fight against Jirobo.

After Sasuke left Konoha with four sound shinobi, Shikamaru gathers a five-person squad to bring Sasuke back. The squad includes Shikamaru himself, Choji, Naruto, Neji, and Kiba. The squad catches up to the four sound shinobi and one of them, Jirobo, decides to take on the whole squad.

Choji decides to fight Jirobo himself and asks Shikamaru to go ahead with the mission. Shikamaru shows faith in Choji and obliges. Jirobo was a strong opponent, and Choji had to use all three of the Akimichi clan’s colored pills. He almost died in this fight and was found unconscious by the medic corps. Thankfully Tsunade’s medical expertise allowed Choji to evade death.

The Death of Asuma

The death of Asuma at the hands of Hidan and Kakuzu left Choji devastated. On his deathbed, Asuma told Choji that he is kind and strong and he needs to believe in himself.

Choji joined Shikamaru, Ino and, Kakashi to battle with Hidan and Kakuzu. They avenge Asuma by killing them both.

The Fourth Great Ninja War

In the Fourth Great Ninja War, we see Choji at his full power. After coming across a reanimated Kakuzu, Team 10 now has to face a reanimated Asuma. Even though Choji was hesitant to attack Asuma at first, he finds his resolve.

He attacks Asuma with Butterfly Choji Mode without even consuming the Akimichi clan’s secret pills. Asuma uses his last moments to congratulate his students and thank Choji for being more confident. Choji once again mourns his sensei but is now strong and ready to lead his clan.

Happy Ending

Choji decides to get Naruto and Hinata a complimentary meal at a nice restaurant as a wedding gift. While it seems a well-thought-out gift, it’s actually a meal for three, and he wants to join them too! Well, Choji wouldn’t be himself if he did not do that.

If Choji wasn’t the perfect friend already, he became one when after he set Shikamaru up with Temari. Someone give him an award for the best wingman!

Foodie

Choji is a foodie. (I don’t want to call him a glutton even though he is just that.) Choji is the kind of guy who eats all day and then gets mad when people call him fat. Relatable.

This one quote from Choji when Ino was about to eat the last piece of meat shows just how much he loves food:

The last piece! This is the end, and the meat most worth enjoying! Nobody…can have this bite!

Loyal and Kind

More than being a foodie, there is something else that defines Choji the most. His kindness and loyalty to his friends. His father, his teacher, and his best friend all knew how kind-hearted Choji was. The reason Choji decided to fight Jirobo was that Jirobo insulted Shikamaru. This is what Choji says to Jirobo while delivering the final blow:

Don’t they say there is nothing scarier than grudge over food? Well, that elbow was for snarfling the last chip. This one is more serious, though. You see, you called me a throwaway pawn. I don’t think I’m ready to forgive that. But even worse…you insult my best friend? That’s way worse than stealing the last bite of the very best food. It’s worse than calling me a fatso or a scumbag. In fact, it’s utterly and absolutely…Unforgivable

How Strong is Choji?

Being kind is Choji’s innate nature and sometimes interferes in his battles. However, when push comes to shove, Choji is incredibly strong.

Choji has massive physical strength, and he combines this strength with his clan’s ninjutsu techniques to inflict harm on his opponents. Even without the use of the Akimichi clan’s secret pills, Choji is really powerful. But after taking the pills, his physical strength skyrockets.

By the end of the series, Choji was able to enter his Butterfly Choji Mode without using the pills! He might as well be the physically strongest shinobi of Konoha.

Appearance

Choji has a chubby build with short and spiky brown hair and round swirl markings on the cheeks. In Naruto, he wears a white t-shirt with the kanji for food printed on it. He pairs the t-shirt with black shorts and blue sandals. Over his t-shirt, he dons a green haori with a white scarf. He also flaunts hoop earrings.

On his head, he wears the most sus-looking headband. While all other shinobi wear a headband that goes around their forehead like a scarf, Choji’s headband looks like blue underwear!

In Naruto Shippuden, like most other characters, Choji’s appearance changes as well. He now wears a red suit with armor plates with the kanji for food engraved on his chest plate. Instead of hoop earrings, he now flaunts studs that were gifted to him by Asuma on becoming a Chunin. Not to mention he grew his hair.

He also changed his sus blue underwear headband to a normal red one. Thank god for that because a fully grown Choji with that blue headband would have been ridiculous!

Fun Facts About Choji

  • Inside the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Choji dreamt of eating an enormous meal while a pretty girl praised him for it.
  • In 2012, Masashi Kishimoto stated in a Shonen Jump interview that Choji and Killer B were currently his favorite characters in the series.

FAQs

Question: Why is Choji always eating?

Answer: Akimichi clan’s Kekkai Genkai, as seen in Choji, Choza, and Chocho, is that they can turn the calories they consume into chakra and even manipulate their body mass to great extents.

Question: Who did Choji marry?

Answer: In the last chapter of Naruto, it is revealed that Choji marries Karui, a kunoichi from the hidden cloud village. Together they have a beautiful daughter named Chocho, and just like her father, Chocho is a glutton. Oops, I mean foodie!

Choji Naruto Guide: Final Thoughts

Even though Choji isn’t the most popular character in the series, he can be seen in many important events that take place during the entire story. Choji plays a minor role in the series but offers a powerful ally for the protagonists.

The kindness that he shows even when he’s one of the strongest in terms of physical abilities teaches us that no matter how strong we are, kindness is always rewarded, and that is our biggest strength.
